Nasdaq, S&P 500 drop as trade tensions rise with new U.S. tariffs

U.S. stocks declined on Monday following President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada. However, major indices pared early losses mid-morning after Trump stated that tariffs against Mexico would be delayed by one month. The Nasdaq Composite reduced its earlier drop to around 1%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average registered a 0.2% decline.

Nasdaq, S&P 500 drop as trade tensions rise with new U.S. tariffs

Consumer discretionary stocks, including automakers, saw significant losses early in the session, while the tech sector also weighed on markets as shares of Nvidia and Apple retreated. The tariffs, initially scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, would impose 25% duties on imports from Canada and Mexico, while Chinese goods would be subject to a 10% tariff. Energy imports from Canada, however, would face a lower 10% duty. The move was met with immediate reactions from trading partners, signaling a deepening trade dispute.

President Trump stated that he had spoken with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers along the border to curb the flow of fentanyl and illegal migration into the United States. “We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one-month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, along with high-level representatives from Mexico,” Trump said.

Financial markets responded to the developments with fluctuations. The U.S. dollar index climbed to near a two-year high, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures surged more than 2%, outpacing the 1.6% rise in the international benchmark Brent crude. Investors continued to monitor market volatility amid the evolving trade situation. Canada and Mexico reacted swiftly to Trump’s tariffs with countermeasures. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25% retaliatory tariff on approximately $107 billion worth of U.S. products, further escalating trade tensions. Mexico is expected to follow suit with similar measures targeting American exports.

The uncertainty surrounding Trump’s trade policies for 2025 has also influenced Federal Reserve policy. The Federal Reserve has maintained interest rates steady, citing concerns over inflationary pressures linked to ongoing trade disputes. The situation remains a focal point for market participants and policymakers alike. The proposed tariffs are expected to directly impact a range of industries, leading to potential price increases on automobiles, auto parts, gas and oil, clothing, computers, whiskey, and avocados. As negotiations unfold, market observers will closely track developments and their broader implications on the global economy. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
